Multi-functional Doormats

Doormats are something we all use, but rarely notice or appreciate.

There are different types of doormat with different benefits. Here we look at just a few of those types.

Outdoor Entrance Mats

The initial barrier faced by dirt and nasties to your home, is the outdoor entrance mat. Located outside in the elements, it traps dirt and moisture and leaves them at the door.

Used to scrape soil and dirt from shoes, outdoor entrance mats drastically reduce the heavy dirt entering your house. Years of design and application have resulted in mats being produced having ‘self-draining’ qualities that allow water to leave the surface of the mat. They are made of robust materials for a robust purpose.

Indoor mats

The next barrier any remaining nasties face are indoor mats. Restricting more dirt missed by the outdoor mat, but to a lesser degree, they prevent and errant material from being spread from room to room. These mats also have a waterproof backing, allowing the mat to absorb its own weight in water. Easily cleanable and in a variety of shapes, colours and materials. Another unsung hero of the home.

Coir mats

Both of the aforementioned ‘types’ of mat are usually made of rubber, but there is another type that should be considered. Coir mats are woven from natural fibres. Their major feature is that they have stiff bristles that mimic an upturned stiff broom. A great tool for deeply cleaning footwear and protecting your home from dirt. They are suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

A drawback with coir mats is that they are not rubber back and as a result won’t hold as much water as their rubber-backed relations, but a benefit is that when wet, they will dry out much quicker than the rubber type.

If you are suffering with dirt carriage into your home and don’t have mats in place, the low-cost, low-maintenance solution might just be installing entrance and/or doormats. You could see a big difference!
